Why did you choose to study abroad?
Studying abroad is something a number of my close relatives have gotten to experience, so part of my decision was definitely influenced by the desire to carry on a “tradition” of sorts. I also saw this as an opportunity to prove to myself that I could go off on my own and be successful!

How was life in your host country different from life in Hickory?
During my previous years here at LR I always lived on campus and most always had some sort of roommate, but while I was living in Salzburg I had a small flat/apartment completely to myself. German is the official language of Austria, but in tourist hot-spots like the city of Salzburg you will find a lot of people who know English! Like in Hickory, the general population was very friendly and helpful. They truly want you to have a great time in the city they love, just like us!

What was the most exciting experience you had while studying abroad?
Apart from the general excitement of managing to travel completely solo for the first time from the United States, I had a great deal of once in a lifetime experiences while in Salzburg! One such occasion was a trip with my ESN (Erasmus Student Network) group, where we spent a Sunday afternoon exploring a salt mine in nearby Hallein, Austria. This particular mine is no longer in use today, but offers the opportunity to traverse underground across the Austria/Germany border and explore tunnels originally dug by hand as early as 1560!

Would you go back?
I brought home a brochure for graduate programs at the university I studied at…does that answer the question? Yes, I would absolutely go back if given the chance! Especially since my semester was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s still so much I haven’t done, but just you wait.

What was the greatest challenge you faced while abroad?
Saying goodbye to my city and my friends much sooner than expected. As I mentioned earlier, the global pandemic surrounding the novel coronavirus forced me to make a decision I never believed I would have to face, especially when alone in a foreign country 6+ hours ahead of my family and friends in NC. However, going through that did not negate my drive to return, or my appreciation for the month I had spent there. A whole semester, or year, can sound scary, but do it anyways! You’ll be glad that you did, and you won’t be able to get enough :)
